I have recently signed a petition which now has over 53 000 signatures calling on the Honours Committee and Cabinet Office to forfeit Harvey Weinstein’s CBE. I am writing to ask you to support this campaign and speak out on this issue.
Three years ago, dozens of allegations for rape and assault surfaced against Weinstein. This paved the way for a global movement and the hashtag #MeToo lit up screens and news feeds across the world, often accompanied by harrowing stories as women and men shared their own stories of sexual exploitation and assault. In February 2020, Weinstein was found guilty of rape and a first degree sexual act by a New York judge. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison for his crimes.
Astonishingly, Harvey Weinstein still holds a CBE in the UK, and the Honours Committee have said that there will be no decision about it this month. We have waited three years since the allegations first came to light (which included a confession and a recording) and 5 months since Weinstein was convicted. I in 5 women in the UK will experience sexual assault in her lifetime. We have waited long enough. We need to send out a powerful signal that we, as a society, do not honour perpetrators of sexual violence.
I’m asking you to call on the Honours Committee and Cabinet Office to take urgent action on this issue, and forfeit Weinstein’s CBE immediately.
I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
